As a believer in the Seventh-day Sabbath, I am often asked by other Christians why I still keep it when we are supposedly under a new dispensation of grace.  Now of course, we could discuss this topic for hours and it is a big study in itself!   But I just wanted to share some basics from the bible of it's importance and relevance today.

What Does the Word Sabbath mean?

The word means 'to set apart as holy'.  Or to 'rest from labour'.

When is the Sabbath?

Genesis 2:2-3 'On the SEVENTH DAY God ended His work which he had made and rested...........And God blessed the SEVENTH DAY and sanctified it.'

Exodus 20:11 'For in six days the LORD made the heavens and earth......and rested on the SEVENTH DAY. Therefore the LORD blessed the SABBATH DAY and made it holy'.

Now some of you might ask how we know when the Sabbath is, since we are 2000 years on from the time of Christ?    Well firstly we know that the Jews still keep the Seventh-day Sabbath and have done since the time of Christ. Also many Christians attend church on the 1st day of the week (Sunday) in memory of when Jesus  was raised from the dead.

Secondly, you only need to look at the word for 'Seventh day' (what we call Saturday) in over 100 languages........here are a few examples:

Arabic: SABET
Armenian: SHABAT
Bosnian: SUBOTA
Bulgarian: SABOTA
Corsican: SABATU
Czech: SOBOTA
Georgian: SABATI
Greek: SAVVATO
Hebrew: SHABBAT
Indonesian: SABTU
Italian: SABATO
Latin: SABBATUM
Portuguese: SABADO
Romanian: SAMBATA
Russian: SUBOTTA
Somali: SABTI
Sudanese: SAPTU

Who's Day Is the Sabbath?

Exodus 20:10 'But the SEVENTH DAY is the sabbath of the Lord Thy God'

Isaiah 58:13 '.......if thou turn thy foot from the SABBATH, from doing pleasure on MY HOLY DAY...'

So we cannot chose when we keep the 'sabbath' as it's God's chosen day.

The choice isn't ours.

Are we COMMANDED to keep God's Sabbath?

Exodus 20:8-11...."Remember the SABBATH DAY, to keep it holy.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

But the SEVENTH DAY is the SABBATH of the LORD THY GOD: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the SEVENTH DAY: wherefore the Lord blessed the SABBATH DAY, and hallowed it."

This is the 4th Commandment!  (Its not a suggestion).

Who was the Sabbath Made For?

Mark 2:27 'Jesus said unto them ..The SABBATH was made for MAN...'

Jesus tells us it was made for man (as in ALL mankind) and not just a small group of ppl.   😊

Is the Sabbath a Burden?

Isaiah 58:13 '.....and call the SABBATH a DELIGHT, the Holy of the Lord...'

Is There Still a Sabbath for Christians?

Hebrews 4:4-9..." For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

There remaineth therefore a SABBATH to the people of God."

Will There Be Sabbath in Heaven?

Isaiah 66:23 'and it shall come to pass that from one new moon to another and ONE SABBATH TO ANOTHER, shall all flesh come to worship me, saith the Lord'.

As I said at the start, that this isn't an exhaustive study but hopefully an introduction for some and a refresher for others. Please feel free to share.
