Did Paul understand who God was?
Most bible students would hopefully agree that after God and Christ, the apostle Paul was the most important figure in the New Testament, especially as he wrote most of the books. A man who at his conversion encountered the risen Christ, would surely have a good understanding of who God was?
Did he believe in the One True God, the Father? Or did he teach a Trinity understanding of God?
Let's have a look at his writings to see what he wrote.
1 Corinthians 8
6 But to us there is but ONE GOD, THE FATHER, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
1 Corinthians 1
8 Grace be unto you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 11
3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the HEAD OF CHRIST IS GOD.
2 Corinthians 1
2 Grace be to you and peace from GOD OUR FATHER, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be GOD, even the FATHER of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.
2 Corinthians 11
31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.
4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from GOD THE FATHER and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
3 Grace to you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the JUDGE OF ALL, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24 AND to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from GOD OUR FATHER, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
3 Grace be to you and peace from GOD THE FATHER, and from our Lord Jesus Christ.
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
2 Grace be to you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Blessed be the GOD AND FATHER of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things BY Jesus Christ:
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.
5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto GOD AND THE FATHER in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from GOD THE FATHER and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of GOD THE FATHER.
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
20 Now unto GOD AND OUR FATHER be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 We give thanks to GOD AND THE FATHER of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you.
1 Thessalonians 1
1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in GOD THE FATHER and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
1 Thessalonians 3
11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you. 12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
2 Thessalonians 1
1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in GOD OUR FATHER and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 Grace unto you, and peace, from GOD OUR FATHER and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2
6 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace.
1 Timothy 1
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 To Timothy my true son in the faith:
3 Grace, mercy and peace from GOD THE FATHER and Christ Jesus our Lord.
17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
1 Timothy 2
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 5
21 I charge thee before God, AND the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
1 Timothy 6
13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, AND before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
2 Timothy 1
2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from GOD THE FATHER and Christ Jesus our Lord.
8. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.
2 Timothy 4
1 I charge thee therefore before God, AND the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom.
Time and time again we see that Paul understood God to be the Father and Jesus was His Son.
There is nothing in his writings to indicate he believes in a trinity. Nothing at all.
Please prayerfully read these verses again and be blessed with the true understand of God is.
